MSH Funded PMTCT Project 2014 – Overview
In its continued stride to increase the uptake of Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services in Nigeria, Management Sciences for Health (MSH) partnered Antof Rural Resource Development Centre (ARRDEC) to carry out activities that will improve PMTCT services in Oron, Akwa Ibom State. The one-year PMTCT project is geared at ensuring pregnant women access Antenatal Care (ANC), HIV Testing and Counseling (HTC), and deliver in Healthcare Facilities. The PMTCT Project which comes under MSH’s Program to Build Leadership and Accountability in Nigeria’s Health System (PLAN-Health), commenced fully in August 2013.

Results-based activities implemented included: sensitization and mobilization visits to relevant stakeholders, Capacity building for Interpersonal Communicators (IPCs), House-to-house outreaches to identify and entice pregnant women, Peer sessions, behave change meeting with male partners, etc.
Key Outcomes:
- 233 pregnant women counseled, tested, and received results on their HIV status due to referral by CSO
- 3 HIV-positive pregnant women were placed on ART.
- 10 Interpersonal Communicators (IPC) were trained to map out and identify pregnant women in Eyo Abasi and Esin Ufot communities of Oron
- A baby given birth to by an HIV-positive mother was saved from HIV-infection
- 50 successful delivery was recorded
