TY DANJUMA FOUNDATION FUNDED PROJECT, March to December 2019
Healthy Mother Healthy Child Project, a TY Danjuma Foundation Funded Project being implemented by Antof Rural Resource Development Centre (ARRDEC) in three LGAs namely: Oti-Oro and Ekeya communities of Okobo LGA; Eyoabasi, Idua Assang and Esin Ufot Communities of Oron LGA; and Eyokponung, Eyibia, and Ekim Communities of Udung Uko LGA of Akwa Ibom State. The project was implemented under the sub-title, “Promoting uptake of ANC and PMTCT services at 2 PHCs each in Oron, Udung Uko, and Okobo LGAs for improved IMNCH”, and the primary target populations were
pregnant women and HIV-exposed infants.

The objective of the project is to contribute to reducing the prevalence of under-five and maternal mortality in Akwa Ibom State, therefore to achieve this, the project worked with the beneficiaries, host communities, engaged the various community structures that impact women’s care-seeking behavior to promote uptake of ANC and PMTCT services at the selected Primary Healthcare Centres in the project locations. Results-focused activities carried out included: Community-based Outreach to create demand for uptake of ANC and PMTCT, HIV Counseling Services, referrals, and follow-up for adherence to treatment for HIV-positive women.
Key Project Outcomes
- 735 pregnant women visited facilities for Antenatal care (ANC) session out of which 690 pregnant women made at least three ANC visits while 338 pregnant women made at least 4 ANC visits.
- 405 babies delivered.
- 47 HIV-positive pregnant women were enrolled for PMTCT services at project selected PMTCT sites
- 27 HIV positive pregnant women were delivered of their babies and placed on an antiretroviral regimen with their HIV exposed babies
- More than 430 women of reproductive age were sensitized directly on the importance and benefits of ANC, immunization, family planning/spacing, nutritional education, etc
- Behavioral Change was communicated to more than 170 male partners (at least 140 men at Men Forum and 31 men at Bi-monthly Health Talk with women)
- The capacity of 45 community structures such as TBAs, Mission Home Operators, PPMVs, Support Groups was built to continually drive the demand for ANC and PMTCT
- The capacity of 15 community health workers (HIV counselor and testers) was built to continually drive the demand for ANC and PMTCT
- TBAs, PPMVs, Community Chief, Mentor Mother, Case Manager, and Community Volunteers were presented with Awards as Healthy Mother, Healthy Child Champions to motivate them to sustain sensitization on the importance of ANC and child immunization in their respective communities across the LGAs
